Video Compressor
Compress MP4, WebM, and MOV videos in your browser without losing visible quality. Your files stay on your device - nothing is uploaded.
Drag & drop a video here
MP4, WebM, or MOV. Files under 200 MB are recommended.
Your video is processed locally in your browser - nothing is uploaded to a server.
How to compress a video online
Choose a video, keep the default Smart settings, and download a smaller MP4.
1
Choose your video
Pick an MP4, WebM, or MOV file from your device. Files under 200 MB work best.
2
Keep Smart compress (recommended)
The default mode shrinks the file while protecting picture quality. Optionally cap the resolution at 1080p or 720p, or pick Maximum quality or a smaller-size mode.
3
Compress and download
Watch the progress, compare the original and compressed previews side by side, and download the MP4.
Built to protect quality first
Most of a video file is often wasted bitrate. This tool removes that waste carefully instead of crushing the picture.
Smart compress (the default)
Smart compress tries up to three careful settings, from gentler to stronger, and keeps the first one that makes the file genuinely smaller. A quality floor protects the picture: it never pushes past the strongest setting, even when a video cannot shrink further without visible loss.
Keep original resolution and frame rate
The video is never upscaled and its frame rate is untouched. Optional caps at 1080p or 720p only shrink larger videos.
Maximum quality, Balanced and Smaller modes
Maximum quality (CRF 18) keeps the most detail but can produce the largest output. Balanced (CRF 24) and Smaller size (CRF 28) trade a little quality for a much smaller file, when size matters more.
MP4 output with fast start
Every result is a standard MP4 (H.264 + AAC) with fast-start metadata, so it plays everywhere and starts streaming immediately.
Good to know before you start
- Processing happens entirely on your device, so a long or high-resolution video can take a while. Keep the tab open while it works.
- Files under 200 MB are recommended for browser-based compression.
- The first time you compress, the browser downloads the compression engine (about 30 MB). Later visits load it from cache.
- Smart compress checks every result it produces and only keeps one that is actually smaller than your original. If a video is already tightly encoded, it may not be able to shrink without visible quality loss; the tool then says so plainly and shows the smallest result it found, with the real numbers either way.
Video Compressor FAQ
Quick answers about quality, formats, file size, and privacy.
Is the Video Compressor free to use?
Yes. You can choose a video, compress it in your browser, preview the result, and download the MP4 for free.
Will compressing reduce my video quality?
The default Smart compress mode is built to shrink the file while protecting the picture. It tries careful settings from gentler to stronger, keeps the original resolution and frame rate, and stops at a quality floor rather than pushing into visible softness. The Balanced and Smaller size modes reduce quality slightly in exchange for smaller files, and Maximum quality mode keeps the most detail of all.
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, WebM, and MOV files can be opened. The output is always MP4, which plays on virtually every device and platform.
How large a video can I compress?
Files under 200 MB are recommended. Compression runs entirely on your device, so very large videos take a long time and a lot of memory. The first use also downloads the roughly 30 MB compression engine into your browser.
Are my videos uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens entirely in your browser using an on-device encoder. Your video never leaves your device, and nothing is stored when you leave the page.
Why did my compressed video come out the same size or larger?
Some videos are already encoded very efficiently, with almost no wasted bitrate left to remove. Smart compress then reaches its quality floor and honestly shows the smallest result it found instead of crushing the picture. Maximum quality mode can also produce a file as large as the original, by design. The tool always shows the real before and after sizes.
